Meaningful travel is not just a concept that we strive for, it’s a commitment to the ecosystems we explore every day. We invite you to step behind the scenes and see what it’s actually like to live and breathe marine conservation here in Dauin, the heart of the Coral Triangle.
From the tiny marvels of critters in the sand to the large-scale restoration of our house reef, here is what a day of impact looks like as the in-house marine biologist at Atmosphere.

Amazing Wunderpus Octopus, a critter in the muck
Morning: Critter Hunt
The day begins with a shift in perspective. Our Critters of Dauin course is designed to transform the way you see the ocean floor. Dauin is world-renowned for its bizarre and beautiful “muck” inhabitants, but finding them requires a trained eye and an understanding of underwater ecology.
We spend the morning learning about the most common creatures spotted on our dive sites, and talk about symbiosis, ecological niches, mimicry and camouflage. By learning the specific habitats and host relationships of creatures like the flamboyant cuttlefish, hairy frogfish, or the ornate ghost pipefish, you level up from a casual, passive observer to an amateur naturalist, spotting life that most divers swim right past. Of course, we have to put these new skills to the test during 2 critter hunting dives!

Afternoon: Citizen Science in Action
After lunch, the work shifts toward data collection and ecosystem restoration. As a guest, you can choose between several options of marine biology dives to join in on. This vital (and fun!) citizen science assists our conservation efforts.
- Seahorse Monitoring & Surveys: Seahorses and their habitats are as fragile as they are enchanting. Because they are indicator species, their health reflects the health of the ecosystem. On these dives, we record population counts, depths, and behaviors. The data you help collect is used to support local policy and conservation measures to ensure these cryptic fish remain protected in Philippine waters.
- Coral Restoration & Artificial Reefs: If you prefer hands-on engineering, join us on the house reef. We are working on a project with clusters of coral planted on artificial reef structures. This method is designed to boost coral cover and aid successful spawning and fertilization. We recommend combining this dive with the PADI Coral Reef Conservation course for deeper knowledge and understanding of coral reefs and the threats they are currently facing. This understanding deepens the value of your participation in the restoration dive. You are physically helping us build a more resilient ecosystem!
There are also many opportunities for kids and non-divers to get involved in sustainability! We have our weekly beach clean, an easy but super effective way for guests to give back to the local area.

There is nothing better than guiding these young eco-warriors as they help keep our beaches clean.
Evening: Sharing Stories & Spirits
As the sun begins to dip, the day’s findings are brought back to the surface. We head to the dive center to update the Critter Board, our community list of everything discovered during the day’s dives! It’s a moment of celebration and sharing as we log rare finds and track the movement of our resident species.

The perfect end to a day in the water
The day concludes at 5:00 PM with our weekly marine life talk. This is the ultimate Ocean Happy Hour! While enjoying a cocktail, you can listen to a presentation about the incredible biodiversity we are lucky enough to have here in Dauin. Afterwards, we share stories from the day’s dives, discuss the special underwater we witnessed, and explore how local efforts connect to global ocean health. It’s a time to connect with fellow travelers who, like you, want their journey to leave a positive wake behind.
