While our resorts offer access to the vibrant underwater worlds of Dauin, the adventure doesn’t stop at the water’s edge. Venture just a short distance inland, and you’ll find a landscape ripe for exploration, from the challenging trails of a majestic mountain to the heartwarming stories of local communities thriving through sustainable initiatives.

Mount Talinis: “Cuernos de Negros” The Horns of Negros – An Adventure Seeker’s Dream

Dominating the skyline of Negros Oriental is Mount Talinis, locally known as Cuernos de Negros, or the “Horns of Negros”. This impressive stratovolcano complex, located at the southeastern tip of Negros Island, is the second-highest peak in the Visayas region, towering at over 1,900 meters above sea level. For those with an adventurous spirit, it offers an exceptionally challenging yet incredibly rewarding hiking experience, often described as one of the toughest on the island.

Hikers embarking on the Mount Talinis journey can expect significant inclines of around 1,500 meters across slippery, rocky slopes intertwined with tree roots and rugged forest trails. The most popular way to experience this natural wonder is through an overnight camping trip at one of its picturesque crater lakes.

Along the trails, you’ll encounter truly unique sights:

  • Twin Crater Lakes: Mount Talinis is home to the enchanting Lake Nailig and Lake Yagumyum, which often appear mystical, especially when fog drifts across their surfaces.

  • Kaipohan Sulfur Vents: These otherworldly spots are characterized by the distinct smell of sulfur and a desolate landscape with blackened trees and yellow-stained ground, contrasting sharply with the surrounding green forests.
  • Diverse Flora and Fauna: The mountain complex is a treasure trove of biodiversity, home to wild orchids, edible berries, and a variety of flora and fauna that captivate photographers.

Nourishing Communities Through Local Initiatives

The beauty of Negros Oriental extends beyond its natural landscapes to the vibrant spirit of its communities. Several initiatives are empowering local residents and promoting sustainable development, aligning perfectly with our commitment to caring for people, planet, and paradise.

  • Baslay Coffee: Just a stone’s throw from Atmosphere Resorts & Spa in Dauin, the Baslay Highland Agriculture Cooperative (Bashaco) stands as a testament to community empowerment. This cooperative transformed “kaingeros” or slash-and-burn farmers into successful environmental stewards and entrepreneurs over two decades. The cooperative now produces Grade 1 specialty coffee, commanding prices significantly higher than mainstream retail coffee, and offers fair wages to its harvesters.

  • Tanjay City’s “Bodbod”: The sweet and famous “bodbod” or rice roll of Tanjay City has also received a boost with its designation as the city’s One Town, One Product (OTOP). This traditional delicacy, enjoyed with a local chocolate drink or fresh mangoes, has been cherished for over a century and is a popular souvenir for tourists.

  • Mt. Talinis Dark Chocolate: Another exciting initiative being championed in Valencia is its cacao products, further diversifying the region’s unique offerings. This initiative, championed by NicoCacao supports local farmers focusing on sustainable practices producing high-quality cacao beans. These beans are then processed into chocolate bars using eco-friendly geothermal and solar-powered dryers and roasters.  It’s a sweet success story where an improved quality of life for local farmers is harmonized with a deep respect for the natural environment.
