Why Become a Sea Turtle Surveyor?

Sea turtles have roamed our oceans for over 100 million years, but today, they face mounting threats from habitat destruction, pollution, climate change, and poaching. As a diver, you have the power to make a real impact! The Sea Turtle Surveyor specialty equips you with the knowledge and skills to contribute to global sea turtle conservation efforts while enjoying unforgettable encounters with these majestic animals in their natural habitat.

What You’ll Learn During the Sea Turtle Surveyor Specialty

This two-dive specialty course is designed to enhance your understanding of sea turtles while training you in responsible diving practices and photographic identification techniques. You’ll cover topics including:

  •  The biology and life cycle of sea turtles
  •  Identification of the seven sea turtle species
  •  The importance of sea turtles in marine ecosystems
  •  The threats they face and how to help conserve them
  •  How to responsibly photograph and log sea turtle sightings for Citizen Science projects

What to Expect Underwater in Dauin

Dauin’s marine sanctuaries provide an ideal setting for encountering sea turtles, particularly green turtles and hawksbill turtles, which are commonly spotted on our reefs. During your two training dives, you’ll put your newfound knowledge to the test by searching for turtles, practicing buoyancy control for minimal environmental impact, and capturing high-quality ID photos to contribute to real conservation efforts.

Who Can Become a Sea Turtle Surveyor?

This specialty is open to certified PADI Open Water Divers (or equivalent) aged 10 and above. Whether you’re a seasoned underwater photographer or a beginner looking to sharpen your skills, this course is a fantastic way to deepen your connection to marine life while making a tangible difference.

Make a Difference with Citizen Science

Your participation goes beyond just learning—you’ll be part of something bigger! By submitting your turtle ID photos to global databases, you’ll help marine biologists track individual turtles, monitor populations, and gain critical insights into migration patterns and behaviours. Every sighting counts!
