A mating pair of octopus on the Atmosphere Resorts house reef

July, August and September have been great months for diving here at the Atmosphere House Reef. We have had mating pairs of frogfish, pregnant ornate ghost pipefish and banded pipefish, a few pairs of leaf scorpion fish, and most recently, a few mating pairs of octopus, all on the house reef! We have known about a few octopus that reside in our house reef for a while, but our divers started seeing a pair together in the beginning of July, which usually means that they are preparing to mate since octopus are very territorial and not usually found together. Sargassum fish in seaweed outside Atmosphere Resort

While unloading tanks after yesterday’s last dive, this weird-looking fish was found by our dive support, nearly washed up on the rocks outside Atmosphere Resorts. They scooped it into a saltwater-filled cooler and called me over to identify it. It turns out that it was a Sargassum fish! A Sargassum fish is actually a kind of frogfish, found in tropical and subtropical seas. They spend their entire lives associated with floating sea grass beds – mostly sargassum algae, a type of brown seaweed. They can even be found floating on or inside of random objects like tin cans. Green sea turtles - a favorite at Atmosphere

Green sea turtles are a favorite of many people, divers and non-divers alike. They are truly graceful creatures, always a lot of fun to swim with underwater, and at Atmosphere, we are very lucky to have an abundance of Green sea turtles at Apo Island and even here along the Dauin coast. They are found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters. Like other marine turtles, the females crawl on land to lay anywhere from 100-200 eggs which hatch roughly two months later and crawl back into the ocean. The first minutes of life are a very dangerous time for a …

We have ID'd our whale shark!

A few days ago, a whale shark cruised by in Dauin, between the Masaplod and Pyramids dive sites and our lucky Atmosphere Resort guests got to swim with the shark and took some photos. Did you know that every whale shark has a different pattern of stripes and dots? This is just like a human fingerprint. We can use these patterns to identify individual whale sharks by taking a specific photo of the left side of the whale shark from the gills to the dorsal fin and uploading it to Ecocean, www.whaleshark.org. Ecocean can use the identification picture to see …

Our Amazing House Reef

One of the greatest things about Atmosphere Resorts when it comes to scuba diving is our amazing house reef. We are blessed with a healthy reef with great muck diving right in our own backyard. Or maybe we should call it “front yard” as it is right in front of the resort? Although the Dauin coast here on Negros Oriental has some amazing dive sites, we have many guests who request to dive our house reef multiple times, because there is so much to see! At the moment we are lucky to have a few resident frogfish that keep our …
